The Oklahoma City Housing Authority said it wants to spread the love of reading to the families and put kids on the road to success
Thousands of Oklahoma children will kick off summer with something new to read thanks to a large book giveaway by the Oklahoma City Housing Authority.
The OCHA was awarded 10,000 books this year through a national reading initiative focused on putting diverse, high-quality books in the hands of kids and teenagers living in public housing.
In addition to the books, an event also brought a snow cone truck and firetrucks to the kids. The Oklahoma City Fire Department handed out fire safety literature to families, as well.
The housing authority said it wants to spread the love of reading to families and put kids on the road to success.
“Studies show that promoting literacy has a positive effect on overall emotional wellbeing, social and emotional outcomes,” Lacy McClain, the assistant director of resident services at the OCHA, said. “We’re hoping through this that families and children can get their summer reading started and a positive start to summer.”
The event was scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Ambassador Courts Community Center. For families who can’t make it, the OCHA has free bookshelves at all of their public housing properties throughout the year.
